Whilst today’s much anticipated winter storm didn’t inflict as much damage here as in other parts of the UK, some villagers are still counting its cost now the strongest winds have died down.
With an Amber Weather Warning in place from the Met Office, Storm Ciara began to ravage Ruddington in the early hours of this morning (Sunday 9th February) and saw gusts of up to 60mph during the day, accompanied by a period of torrential rain. This was enough to break several trees – including one adjacent to St Peter’s Rooms (top photo) which came crashing down, damaging the historic roof, some guttering and a security light on its way. This morning Ruddington Parish Council issued the warning: “Can any visitors avoid the area. Part of the tree has been left standing and is in a dangerous state – as the remainder of the tree may come down. It is currently unsafe to work under due to the weather conditions.” The driveway has been coned off.
Then, in the early afternoon, one of the old willow trees on The Green also partially succumbed to the vicious winds, whilst a tree was blown over into the car park at Rushcliffe Country Park. Throughout Ruddington, householders are reporting roof tiles ripped off, fallen fences and other minor damage as the storm tore through our village. Forecasters say the worst is now over, however stormy conditions will persist into this coming week – which is likely to hinder repairs.
It’s just less than three years since Storm Doris hit Ruddington and caused a similar level of damage – including a fallen tree blocking the access to St Peter’s School.
